Joey Quintero Essay 5/17

In the article "Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination" Greenhouse states that "hiring attractive people is not necessarily illegal." I've always believed that a company should be able to hire whom ever they want, when ever they want. So yes, I agree with the fact that they do this to help project the companies image. I know people will argue this quoting the article, that this is a discriminatory act. On one hand I believe it can be mistaken for discrimination due to the fact that they don't hire just anybody. On the other hand we can argue that companies want to hire people according to what best suits the company image.
Every company wants what's best for them, and if hiring workers that look as if they are very attractive that project the company image is how to benefit them, then why not do it? Think of it this way, what if you were in the owners shoes what would you do? I know for a fact that everybody just wants to be successful and if hiring people like that is what it takes, then you have to do what you got to do.
Every person has a place where they will fit in and maybe its not a store like Abercrombie & Fitch. Maybe its a sports store or even another clothing store that best suits them. I would never expect to get hired at a place like Abercrombie & Fitch because of the fact that I am always dressing athletic. But, I wouldn't have a doubt that I would get hired at Big 5 because thats who I am. You can never go somewhere  and be something you're not, things just don't work out that way.You should be able to go to work saying this is me, still the same.
My conclusion, then, is that companies are going to choose whom ever they want to work for them no matter what. It's never really discriminating if they choose somebody that they think will help the company succeed. My advice to everybody would be try to work where you best fit in, so you never have to worry about any of this and you can just be yourself.

When Joe and I discussed the situation we decided that it is not right to hire only the people that project the companies image. Someone may not like to wear a companies clothing but they are in desperate need of a job. It wouldn't be fair if the job was given to a person that projected the company instead of someone that was experienced. That could even be profiling and that can lead to a lot of problems. People can take it very offensive and start bringing up race and anything else that has to do with that.

Today we learned that if writing a college paper you need the perfect template. That consists of your reasoning and the facts to back up your reasoning. You would also have to include the authors point of view. For example in college you need to have all of these things in your essay.

One of the points we found was that animals don't have voices to speak for themselves when they are in need of help or in pain. For example, when lady was going through surgery and all the intensive treatments, the doctors assumed that it was for the best but deep down she probably couldn't take it anymore.
The second point was that some people go through thick and thin to save their animals life regardless the price. Shawn Levering was willing to pay more than $1,500 for a transplant. This transplant wasn't a guarantee that lady would survive. Instead of paying that towards the surgery, shawn could have given a down payment on a house or fixed up his trucks. But the cat was like their child so they were willing to pay an  enormous amount of money to save a life.
The use of pathos in this article was very strong and descriptive. "It really hit me and made me think of what I would actually go through to save my pets life," said Joey. "Some points of the article really threw out so many images and flashbacks that reminded me of my pets,"said Joe. His use of pathos was excellent of very well thought out.
The author also used a lot of logos. For example, "Dogs with this kind of cancer don't respond well to chemo. The doctor gently suggested  putting the dog to sleep...," the logic of this sentence is that no matter how much chemotherapy they use, the dog will probably end up dying.
Joe and I both strongly agree that the use of logos was exceedingly well, but the use of pathos was stronger through out the article. The author was very descriptive and was able to introduce mental images and emotions into us.
Although i agree with the author to a point, I personally feel that no matter how much you love your pets, $1,500 is a lot of money and could be spent on other things. In the case of Shawn Levering, he was a hard working middle class man, but like everyone else, money was tight. Having to spend so much money on an animal, with a chance that it wouldn't make it out alive, isn't the ideal thing to do. Shawn could have given a down payment to a new house and lived happier or could have worked on his dream truck.
I would understand if it was a real child and not a cat  because who wouldn't do anything for their kids health. For example, a mom goes through the pain for nine months and still has to go through birth. That brings the child and the mom closer because the baby is a part of the mom and dad. Unlike a cat, all you do is adopt it with out the pain. The cat does not carry the same genes as the mother like a baby would. So the emotional feelings aren't the same in my opinion.

The Animal Medical Center is one of its own in new york, working to save with their 24 hour emergency services.
So today we talked more about topic sentence paragraphs. We discussed that the topic sentence should always be followed by the supporting body. In some cases you also want to make the next paragraph hold hands with the previous one.
We also learned parallelism; parallelism is similarity structure of words, phrases , or clauses.

Our reaction towards the first part of the article was very surprising. The way we interpreted that was because it seems all three of the characters suffer from more then one illness. No matter what the medical problem is, they love each other and will stop at nothing to make each other happy.
As we continued reading, we came to realize that the cat is less of a pet but more of a family member. The cat is being treated like their own child. Shawn is was willing to spend $400 to get her teeth pulled. "Honestly I wouldn't spend $400 on a pet," said Joe. "Well I fall in love with my pets so i would be willing to spend that money on it," said Joey.
As you can see we have two very different point of views, but we what we both agree on is that if you  love some one or something very much, you wold go the extra mile to make them happy.

1. We came to the conclusion that the next essay will be about cats born or living with a medical condition. The reasons why, both the vocabulary words and the title of the essay introduce the fact that both subjects will be combined for the idea of cats with medical conditions.

2.There is an importance for pets in our lives, playing a huge role as a member of the family, but in other cases they aren't just pets, they are heroes. For example, police and military dogs risk there lives to save other lives everyday in various scenarios.

What is the main point that Drehle makes? Does the author of the student essay your are considering address that point? What do you think about his claims, especially in light of the quick poll that we took at the beginning of class? How does this affect the author's ethos (his or her integrity; how much faith we have in his argument)? How does this essay compare to Victor's essay?
The main point that Drehle makes, is the inconvenience of summer learning loss. Drehle's states how unprivileged students don't have the same opportunities as others do. I feel like the author of this essay doesn't address the main point of the article because he or she is only trying to focus on the the negative point of view. Its not whether or not they want to attend a summer enrichment program, but its whether they have the money to attend.
This person assures us that the vast majority of students today wouldn't attend a summer enrichment program, but they only mentioned high school students. Some high school students wouldn't attend due to having a job to save up for college. Others may not attend because its the last summer they get to spend with the family before heading out to college.
Yes, school is work and summer is fun, but the more knowledge you have ,the more fun you'll have later on. Having a good education will bring you greater pay, thus giving you the opportunity to travel and have fun. On the other hand, those who decided to not to make an effort towards advancing their education, are now working during summer and not having as much fun.

The term for the purple thumb originated in the 2005 Iraqi election as a symbol of democracy .It represented the fact that somebody had voted. Here in the U.S.  all we get is a sticker, but in other countries like iraq, they walk around with their purple thumb knowing they have fulfilled their duty to vote.

On the day Obama delivers his address, thousands of Egyptians, inspired by the democratic uprising in Tunisia that forced the dictator Zine el Abidine Ben Ali to flee, plan to gather on the streets of Cairo to protest three decades of authoritarian rule by the U.S. client regime of President Hosni Mubarak. It promises to be a tense encounter, with the authorities warning they will crack down firmly against an illegal demonstration. But younger activists in Egypt are eager to test the will of the regime, emboldened by the Tunisian example.

Joe and I believe that the first sentence of this paragraph is the topic sentence because it gives you a brief outline on what the paragraph is about. This is a good paragraph because the first sentence is supported by the rest of the paragraph and the context stays within its boundaries of one topic. Like Mr. Hamilton said,"one topic, one paragraph."

Today in class Mr.Hamiton reminded us that a paragraph has to build off its main idea. The topic sentence sets the pace for the paragraph. You can never get through a paragraph with just questions you need ideas and facts to follow those questions.
