JOE & JOEY

What is the main point that Drehle makes? Does the author of the student essay your are considering address that point? What do you think about his claims, especially in light of the quick poll that we took at the beginning of class? How does this affect the author's ethos (his or her integrity; how much faith we have in his argument)? How does this essay compare to Victor's essay?
The main point that Drehle makes, is the inconvenience of summer learning loss. Drehle's states how unprivileged students don't have the same opportunities as others do. I feel like the author of this essay doesn't address the main point of the article because he or she is only trying to focus on the the negative point of view. Its not whether or not they want to attend a summer enrichment program, but its whether they have the money to attend.
This person assures us that the vast majority of students today wouldn't attend a summer enrichment program, but they only mentioned high school students. Some high school students wouldn't attend due to having a job to save up for college. Others may not attend because its the last summer they get to spend with the family before heading out to college.
Yes, school is work and summer is fun, but the more knowledge you have ,the more fun you'll have later on. Having a good education will bring you greater pay, thus giving you the opportunity to travel and have fun. On the other hand, those who decided to not to make an effort towards advancing their education, are now working during summer and not having as much fun.

THE JOES

The term for the purple thumb originated in the 2005 Iraqi election as a symbol of democracy .It represented the fact that somebody had voted. Here in the U.S.  all we get is a sticker, but in other countries like iraq, they walk around with their purple thumb knowing they have fulfilled their duty to vote.

JOE & JOEY

On the day Obama delivers his address, thousands of Egyptians, inspired by the democratic uprising in Tunisia that forced the dictator Zine el Abidine Ben Ali to flee, plan to gather on the streets of Cairo to protest three decades of authoritarian rule by the U.S. client regime of President Hosni Mubarak. It promises to be a tense encounter, with the authorities warning they will crack down firmly against an illegal demonstration. But younger activists in Egypt are eager to test the will of the regime, emboldened by the Tunisian example.

Joe and I believe that the first sentence of this paragraph is the topic sentence because it gives you a brief outline on what the paragraph is about. This is a good paragraph because the first sentence is supported by the rest of the paragraph and the context stays within its boundaries of one topic. Like Mr. Hamilton said,"one topic, one paragraph."

Today in class Mr.Hamiton reminded us that a paragraph has to build off its main idea. The topic sentence sets the pace for the paragraph. You can never get through a paragraph with just questions you need ideas and facts to follow those questions.
